Hawaiian Leis

Hawaiian Leis

No trip to Hawaii is complete without getting a Hawaiian Leis lovingly bestowed upon you by one of the beautiful girls of the islands.

The Hawaiian Lei is traditionally bestowed upon visitors to Hawaii upon their arrival to the islands and is a symbol of affection from the island people.

Lei is a Hawaiian word for a garland or wreath. It's more easily described as any series of objects strung together with the intent to be worn.

Most Hawaiian Leis are made from fresh native flowers including; the plumeria, lehua blossom or the orchid, and maile leaves (are traditional among hula dancers).

Although not as popular, there are other types of Hawaiian Leis such as those made out of seashells, fabric, origami paper or feathers - but their charm can't match a traditional flower Hawaiian Lei and are not customarily given to visitors to the islands.

Hawaiian LeiThe Hawaiian Lei is steeped in tradition and culture and given (or worn) on many special occasions in life - most notably the Lei is worn for graduation, funerals, birthdays, weddings and bridal showers.

If you receive a Lei during your vacation to Hawaii, take care not to dispose of your gift without thinking. A traditional flower Hawaiian Lei should be returned to the earth by being placed back where it was picked, burned or buried. Not doing so shows a great disrespect to the giver of the Lei, and to Hawaiian culture in general.
