The key to beautiful stained glass artwork is a well thought out stained glass patterns. And suprisingly, some people just getting started in stained glass have no clue where to start to find a design to start their project with. Fortunately, it's not hard to find and design and you can use practically anything for a little inspiriration. All it requires is some attention and a little pad of paper that you can trace it out on.

Some people purchase pre-made stained glass designs from a craft store or online retailer, however, it is not necessary to go to this extra expense. Inspirations for stained glass patterns are everywhere. If you are lacking ideas, just take a walk around your house or outside to look for motivation. Perhaps your grandmother loves to quilt and has a variety of quilting books. They can make for a great pattern and sometimes borrowing from another art form can give you something a little different then you get in the same glass pattern books. Maybe there is some artwork in your home that you would like to transform into stained glass art. The key to a great pattern is something that will be relatively easy to trace and does not have parts that are extremely intricate.

After you have decided what you want to make into a stained glass pattern, you need to transfer that onto paper. Make sure you have some light coming into the room so you can make this job easy on yourself, or at least have a light around you so you can get a good trace. Holding it up to a window is another low-tech method that often works well. After the tracing is complete, have your image transferred onto two sheets of heavy paper (a card stock will work well). Save one of these in a file, in case you would like to reuse the stained glass pattern. You might even be able to collect yourself a great collections of patterns, maybe you can even give away your own uniquely designed free stained glass patterns The other paper should be color marked and cut into pieces so that you can begin cutting the glass for your design.

The next time you are lacking motivation for a stained glass masterpiece, remember there are ideas all around you. A well thought out stained glass pattern is the road map to a work of art you will enjoy for years to come. You need to keep in mind that a good glass pattern is just as important as all the stained glass supplies that you have in your shop.
